The García Cugat Foundation
García Cugat Foundation was created in 2007 by a group of doctors, veterinaries and professionals of health that have been researching for longer than a decade biological treatments as Growth Factors applied to bone, tendon, muscle, ligament etc. From 2010, García Cugat Foundation started a line of therapies with stem cells in treatments of anterior cruciate ligament injuries and cartilage (osteoarthritis.) Nowadays, MD Montserrat García Balletbó, researcher in biological treatments of tissue regeneration, directs the foundation. The foundation is named after the orthopaedic surgeon and expert in both arthroscopy and physical education medicine, Mr. José García Cugat, founder of the Spanish arthroscopy association (Asociación Española de Artroscopia.)
The main aim of the foundation is to favour, promote and foster the professional career of health graduates with limited resources or health graduates interested in using therapeutic biological processes. In order to fulfill this aim, we have created the grant José García Cugat, allowing a Spanish or foreign student to cover the expenses of his/her studies.
- Foundation’s current activity is focused on the identification, quantification and knowledge of the acting of growth factors in order to find methods that favour the recovery/regeneration of tissues, as well as the use of mesenchymal stem cells obtained from adipose tissue.
- García Cugat Foundation together with University CEU Cardenal Herrera of Valencia have created the new University Chair of Medicine and Regenerative Surgery. The aim is to continue promoting the treatment of cartilage lesions with regenerative therapies, combining the use of mesenchymal stem cells obtained from adipose tissue and plasma rich in growth factors to repair articular cartilage. In sports medicine, this new Chair will continue to drive the application of these therapies in ligament injuries (e.g. break of the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee,) muscle injuries and tendon lesions frequently suffered by young athletes, as well as skin regeneration in cutaneous injuries.
